Mise en scène

Fantastic Mr. Fox – Angry at Fox

Setting and Props

Based on dirt, stones and tree roots it’s clear that the scene is set in an underground tunnel. Mr Fox and his family wearing pyjamas I can guess that the time of scene is set during the night. The only notable props are lanterns and flashlights creating the lighting and mood of the shot.

Costume, hair, and makeup

Mr Fox and his family is wearing pyjamas. Mr Badger is wearing a suit however his tie is untied which helps to show that he is tired after a long day of digging. These costumes show the personality differences between Mr Fox and Mr Badger. Mr Badger is a dedicated hardworking person who wouldn’t go to sleep until the work is done. Mr Fox is a calm and family person who likes going to bed early.

Facial Expressions & Body Language

Both Mr Fox and Mr Badger are tired and angry. Mr Fox and his family looks confused and surprised when Mr Badger blames them. The Mole is sad because he would like to see sunshine although he is blind. I like this scene because it adds humour and it breaks the tense situation. The scene graduates with the beaver bullying a small fox. His bigger brother then fights the beaver. The beaver leaves the scene crying.

Lighting and Color

The only light sources in the scene are lanterns and flashlights. The lantern creates dim, warm and moody light.

Positioning of Objects/Characters in the Frame

The characters are split into two main groups. Each group is on the other side of the tunnel. The positioning helps with creating of impression that the groups are arguing.

What role does the shot choice play in the scene?

The scene starts with two establishing medium shots that introduce both groups. As the groups start arguing there is more close up shots especially when characters try to demonstrate emotion. Then the camera leaves the two groups in the background and focuses on the beaver and fox kids. In this shot, the depth of field is deep so the audience can see that the conversation between the two groups continues.

Setting and Props

The setting of the scene looks like a hotel room. I guess it’s a hotel room because the night stands are empty. There is probably a suitcase on the left side.

Costume, hair, and makeup

They have outdoor clothes and to me, they look like a couple.

Facial Expressions & Body Language

Both characters look tired, sad. They look like after a long day of travelling. Especially, the woman looks sad and lonely.

Lighting and Color

Both characters are set perfectly in the centre of the frame. The composition looks symmetrical – two of them, two nightstands etc. The whole shot looks empty and clean.

What role does the shot choice play in the scene?

The scene is shot with a wide lens with a high angle. I would say that the choice of lens and camera angle helps us to see the big empty room and enhance the loneliness, sadness, tiredness of the characters.
